@tom.fitzgerald13: On a small island in 1612, two of Japan’s greatest swordsmen met in what would become one of history’s most famous duels. Sasaki Kojirō arrived first. Miyamoto Musashi arrived late. The delay was deliberate, to unsettle his opponent and by the time Musashi stepped ashore, he had carved a wooden sword from an oar during the journey across. Musashi struck Kojirō before he could recover from his own famous Tsubame Gaeshi (“Swallow Cut”), and one of the greatest rivalries in Japanese history came to an end. Like many famous historical duels, the details differ between later accounts. Some were written decades after the event, and separating fact from legend isn’t always straightforward but whatever happened Musashi survived, Kojirō did not, and the encounter became one of the defining stories of Japanese martial tradition. Bruce Lee was cool, almost as cool as his vegetarian brother, Brocco Lee.

gotta love the contradiction. Japan: to wield a sword is to fight honorably, with decency and respect, so say the Bushido texts. The greatest japanese blademaster: so yeah I decided to make him wait a lot to fuck with him and get him tired lol

should we ignore the sun and the psychological delay in arriving, which were also documented?

Kojiro is the better swordsman, but Mushashi is the better warrior.

This is probably my favorite story in Japanese history. Musashi played him like a fiddle. Arrived late so the sun was in his eyes and he was enraged at the disrespect, then took him down with a hand carved weapon.

imagine dying from blunt force trauma from an oar than a noble samurai slash

We see time and time again that Bruce Lee was wrong with that quote. You can use this sentiment in modern combat sports especially MMA. Champions who seem unbeatable but have predictable styles get beaten after some time bc they get figured out. Khazmat, Topuria even later Adesanya. They don't change up their games. Also to parallel this story when Pereira went to HW he lost to Gane exactly because he rellied on his long reach for defense, an advantage he didn't posses against Gane
