The Laestrygonians were done using forced perspective, not CGI. The only reason CGI was used for Charybdis is because you cannot just make a whirlpool on her scale. Besides, her effects were layered over a smaller whirlpool.

Soldiers were 7 foot stunt men with sub 5 foot body doubles all done in Camera. Maybe some of them were CG for close-ups with Matt Damon and the rest of the crew but major majority of it were doubles.

Why is not using cgi such a big thing? Obviously it sucks when new movies like marvel ones are filled with CGI and fully shot on green screens, but CGI is a beautiful tool and IS art. The only times CGI is bad is when it’s not done right because of the restrictions studios force onto the artists.
