Cold tests... I keep saying to warm the oil to the engine's operating temperature and test. Nobody does that, but that's where it makes all the difference.

What’s misleading is that this test only measures one very specific type of friction or wear under artificial conditions. An engine oil has to perform across many different conditions — cold starts, high temperatures, turbocharger lubrication, deposits, oxidation, viscosity stability and engine-specific requirements. So an oil doing better in this machine does not automatically mean it protects an actual engine better. Manufacturer approvals and proper engine tests are far more relevant than a simple bench friction test.
