The genus name Maip derives from an Aonikenk (Tehuelche) mythological entity associated with death and cold winds, while macrothorax refers to its unusually expanded thoracic region. Phylogenetically, Maip macrothorax is placed within Megaraptora, a clade generally considered part of Coelurosauria, though its precise affinities remain debated. Its occurrence in latest Cretaceous South America indicates that megaraptorans persisted as large-bodied predators in Gondwanan ecosystems after the extinction of carcharodontosaurids, coexisting with abelisaurids and occupying high trophic levels.
