@makelithappen: More amateur #writing mistakes and how you can fix them (check out a great deep dive into purple prose from @Gina Denny ) #writingcommunity #writingtips #writersoftiktok #writertok
Purple Prose drives me nuts!! I've lost count of how many works I've DNF'd because of it. We do not need 3 paragraphs explaining how a character smells! We don't need 5 describing how the lighting illuminates the room! Are theses good small details to have, Yes! Emphasis on 'small' auughhh

I personally dislike the hate towards purple prose. in some genres, like cosmic horror, adding a touch of lavender to your lovecraftian scenes is a genre necessity, but the online discourse on purple prose leaks into people's perception of the litteral mechanism through which unknowable horrors are delivered to the human mind. so any time people are like "ew your void scenes get a little purple" i'm just like THAT'S THE GENRE 😭

Can you give an example of what purple prose is—for those who don’t understand it? I’ve realized that people often say amateur writers make certain mistakes, but they never really dive into what those mistakes actually look like. We’re just expected to know things, and that leads to miscommunication. We can say "no purple prose" all day long, but if someone doesn’t know what purple prose looks like, they won’t get it.
The same goes for repetition—repetition of emotions, reactions, situations, words, etc. We have to be specific. I still get lost with it.

Author Evangeline Williams :
I believe you that these are common weaknesses, but the *most* common one I see with new writers I beta read for (and suffered from myself when I started out) was the inability to recognize the difference between showing and telling with any level of nuance or knowing when which is the best option. People use so many “emotion words” to tell readers how a character feels. Then the next stage, they learn to lose the emotion words and replace them with heart pounding, clenched fists, narrowed eyes, blinking… without realizing that doesn’t fix the problem, it just adds choreography. Sometimes necessary choreography, but it’s not capable of doing the job of immersing the reader.

Hot take: if you think without purple prose means dumbing down writing, it means you’re writing can’t be captivating without the flowery writing, and that’s why purple prose is seen as amateur writing because you can’t write effectively without it

I’d rather read no conflict than trite, overplayed third act misunderstandings that are shoehorned in because the author is just following the formula though. Like if it reads as contrived, I get annoyed

Can’t stand repetitive writing it’s like watching a CW show. They start to repeat themselves of past issues after the 3rd season.

Hi there 👋🤗 :
Quick question, how do you write a scene with let's say seven characters in one room together and they are all speaking.

Or like Stephanie Meyer: Conflict is happening but the main character is not there to witness it so neither are you as the reader.

got scared at first but these are all things discussed at length while working on my degree! the repetition thing sometimes comes from authors afraid their readers wont get something. i always have to tell newer writers in workshops to trust their readers!

My comics teacher in HS said this ab conflict: make your character and then beat them up in horrendous ways. Don’t kill them, just beat them up.

while this is true, the industrialized 3 act conflict is conditioned for a western audience, whereas the 4 act kishotenketsu relies on internal conflict and transformation. think any miyazaki film

Wait, how can you be a writer and not have conflict in your story? Can someone give me an example of this, excluding children’s books?
