If you can imagine something and draw it out the way you see it in your head. That is someone being an artist. Most of the stuff I tattoo is not stuff I draw. At my core I’m a tattooer who sometimes gets to be a tattoo artist. This conversation is important. I know plenty of tattooers who can’t draw. That doesn’t make me any better, although I do look at tattooers who draw all original pieces with a different level of respect, than just a tattooer who copies stuff but does an amazing job of it.

Never liked the word artist in the tattoo industry, but that's just me after trying for years 🤣
what makes an artist is doing art, what makes a tattooist, doing tattoos
what makes a tattoo artist is doing both 😅

Being an artist (personally) is simply having the ability or want to create, I think that’s a fair definition 👀 be it music, clothing, traditional art like painting, anything, involving AI is where it gets tricky. For sure it has a place in our world but not in our industry.

To me a tattooist can do good or even great tattoos. A tattoo artist can create tattoos from their mind by seeing a vision.

You’re an artist if you have the balls to create something, anything, instead of just rotting. Nothing that artists create is truly original in a literal sense because they had to experience/perceive something first in order to create. If you’re an artist that only copies you’re still an artist but one that accepts the subject for what it is and chooses not to add their own style or preferences.

Drawing is an art and a skill, tattooing is a separate art and skill. Do they overlap? Yep. Do you have to be able to draw to tattoo? It helps, but it isn't necessary, especially in this day and age. You don't even have to use AI, you can use other editing techniques to achieve digital stencils that you like. You all also use painting and color theory skills too, but did whoever make the drawing argument bring that up? I doubt it. They probably heard it on Ink Master tbh. 😂

Some may find it an uncomfortable conversation but it’s just facts. Theres a lot of nuance in place where art and tattooing meet.

You are or become an Artist in the moment u create a Reaction, a feeling, an idea, when u motivate, when u inspire and This in all areas: martial arts, draw, music, tattoo... no matter how u do your art, as soon as has a result. ❤️

Tattooing is a craft. Any tattooer who thinks they’re on par with Pablo Picasso is on glue

Totally weird timing……I’m literally sat copying your flamingo tattoo on procreate……and i was trying to find you to message to see if it annoys you when people copy your artwork. And before you slaughter me…..I’m not finished

I’ve been very bleh about Ai. But honestly there is zero difference between looking at a reference and looking at an AI reference. And arranging it in their way is the same as doing it with google and Pinterest.

I don’t know? I never considered myself an artist and often laugh when other tattooers call themselves artists. A true artist is holed up in a dark room alone, hasn’t slept for days and is tapping in to a source that none of us understand. Picasso, Dali, Michael Angelo, DaVinci etc were all creating from a place of solitude and pure genius. Having a clients opinion involved in the process ,blocks that flow of genius that true artists draw from. There are very few tattooers that can honestly call themselves artists. Paul Booth, Ed Hardy, Guy Atchison and Marcus Pacheco are just a few that I would place in the rank of artist

I think it really boils down to what the customer wants . A lot of ai isn’t doable at all but if we can come close and make a good tattoo that will last. Us tattoo artists need to leave our ego at the door when it comes to what they want. They have to live with it.

if you can't draw a dinosaur riding a rocket fart powered flying unicorn wearing a bright pink feather boa and robbing a dennys, FROM MEMORY!!!! then you're not a real artist.

Art is subjective to the onlooker and the creator ; i don’t even think it can be even properly debated. Personally if you create something an call it art - your an artist weather we agree to disagree. Ive seen wood stumps with clear coat slapped on-top being sold as art for 10-15k but then again whos to say its not . Do i think someone typing in a prompt is an artist ? No but who am i to say its not

I know someone who can only copy and not draw from memory and I know someone who can draw from memory but can’t copy for shit. And I know people that can do both. I don’t think there’s any right way just different
