@bodhiandkai: This might be the eeriest train station in Japan. Doai is nicknamed the "mole station," and the moment you look down you understand why. The platform is buried 70 meters underground, and the walk from there to the exit takes a full ten minutes through a dim, damp tunnel. The strangest part is that nobody planned it this way. When the train line was made in 1967, engineers had to bore a new tunnel far deeper through the mountain, and the platform simply ended up down there. Japan's deepest station, entirely by accident. (Btw to find more weird wonders like check out the link in our bio) And they never softened the climb, so there are no escalators and no elevators, just a single staircase of 462 steps. The deeper you go, the colder it gets. On a 30-degree summer day the surface can be 10 degrees warmer than the platform, so climbing out feels like resurfacing from a cave. It's a totally unstaffed station now with only about five trains a day in each direction, which means you'll often have all 462 steps completely to yourself. Just you, the silence, and a very long way up. The best part? It's the gateway to Mt. Tanigawa, which is famous for hotsprings and hiking! So you can compliment both with a rewarding soak in the bath.
