El agujero negro supermasivo y quasar TON 618 es una auténtica monstruosidad cósmica. Su horizonte de sucesos tiene un radio de unos 1.300 UA (unidades astronómicas); para ponerlo en perspectiva, 1 UA es la distancia media entre la Tierra y el Sol. Es decir, si colocáramos TON 618 en el centro de nuestro Sistema Solar, su horizonte de sucesos se extendería muchísimo más allá de la órbita de Neptuno. Si aproximamos su horizonte de sucesos a una esfera, el volumen encerrado sería de unos 9.200 millones de UA³, una cifra tan absurda que cuesta incluso visualizarla. Y lo más salvaje no es su tamaño, sino su masa: alrededor de 66.000 millones de masas solares. Dicho de otro modo, dentro de ese horizonte de sucesos hay tanta masa como la de 66.000 millones de soles comprimida en una única singularidad gravitatoria. Para rematar la locura, la masa de TON 618 equivale aproximadamente a entre un 5 % y un 7 % de la masa total de la Vía Láctea. Sí, un solo agujero negro concentra una fracción apreciable de la masa de toda nuestra galaxia. ☝️🤓
