@lucasvisual: Have you ever looked at an empty place and felt strangely uneasy, even though nothing appears to be wrong? A deserted school corridor after hours. A silent shopping mall. A dimly lit stairwell. An empty waiting room where it feels as though someone should be there but isn't. These ordinary locations can evoke an unexpected feeling that's difficult to describe: familiar, nostalgic, and quietly unsettling all at the same time. These are known as liminal spaces. In architecture and psychology, a liminal space is a place of transition a location designed to move people from one destination to another rather than somewhere they're meant to stay. Hallways, airports, train stations, hotel corridors, parking garages, and stairwells all exist between moments rather than as destinations themselves. So why do they feel so eerie? Part of the answer lies in expectation. Our brains associate these spaces with activity. Schools are meant to be filled with students. Airports with travelers. Shopping centers with crowds. When those familiar environments are suddenly empty, the absence of people becomes impossible to ignore. The silence feels unnatural, as though time itself has paused. Lighting plays an equally important role. The soft glow of fluorescent lights, long shadows, or the warm colors of sunset can transform an ordinary room into something that feels almost dreamlike. Familiar places begin to lose their everyday identity, becoming scenes that seem suspended somewhere between reality and memory. Perhaps that's why liminal spaces have become such a popular subject online. People often describe these photographs as feeling like memories from a dream or places they've visited before but can't quite remember. They're nostalgic without belonging to a specific moment, creating an emotional response that's surprisingly universal. What's remarkable is that these images aren't frightening because of what's in them. They're unsettling because of what's missing. No movement. No conversation. No obvious purpose. Just ordinary places caught in extraordinary moments of stillness. Sometimes the most haunting photographs don't show something unusual at all. They simply capture familiar places at a moment when they feel strangely disconnected from the world we expect them to belong to. #liminalspace #liminalspaces #liminalspacetiktok #liminal #surreal

I took this in Ohio when I was driving around at night trying to get photos of the northern lights. It makes me feel a strange mix of unnerved and nostalgic.

i think what makes it weird is when an outdoor space is lit like it's inside, we can't really tell where the light source is or it doesnt make sense and things are only partially lit
