Yesterday, August 8, Lake Anne @lakeanneplaza in Reston hosted one of the most delightfully chaotic events I’ve been to — the Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta! This annual Reston tradition started in 2017 and brings together families, friends, local businesses and organizations to build LIFE-SIZE boats out of… cardboard. Yes, cardboard. Then they actually have to GET IN THEM and race across Lake Anne. And there are rules! The boat itself has to be built from cardboard — no waterproof/pre-treated cardboard, Styrofoam or sneaky flotation materials. They can use things like duct tape, masking tape, wood glue/contact cement and water-based paint/sealer, but no nails, screws, staples or other structural shortcuts. Then comes the best part: teams climb aboard and race out around a buoy and back to the dock in timed heats. The event supports the Reston Museum @restonmuseum and is all about bringing the community together for a day of creativity, competition and some truly questionable cardboard engineering. This was my first time going, and it was PURE CHAOS in the absolute best way. Everyone was such a good sport whether their boat crossed the finish line or ended up at the bottom of Lake Anne.
