South Asia possesses the potential to become one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions, yet political rivalry has often limited opportunities for regional cooperation. Some analysts argue that India’s investments in neighboring countries, particularly Afghanistan and Iran, have been influenced not only by economic considerations but also by broader geopolitical objectives, including reducing Pakistan’s strategic importance as a regional trade corridor. From this perspective, projects such as the development of Iran’s Chabahar Port and investments in Afghanistan were viewed as alternative routes that could provide access to Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan. However, persistent political instability, security challenges, international sanctions, and changing regional dynamics have affected the commercial returns and long-term sustainability of many of these initiatives. It is important to recognize that such outcomes were shaped by multiple complex factors rather than a single political objective.
A more constructive path for the region lies in economic cooperation rather than strategic competition. Pakistan and India have much to gain from reopening meaningful diplomatic dialogue based on mutual respect, pragmatism, and a commitment to peaceful coexistence. Enhanced trade relations, regional energy cooperation including the possibility of facilitating cross-border gas infrastructure where politically and economically feasibility and improved connectivity could generate substantial economic benefits for both nations. Likewise, reducing hostile narratives, encouraging transparent business partnerships, and prioritizing people-to-people engagement would help build confidence between the two countries. The citizens of Pakistan and India share deep historical, cultural, and social connections, and many aspire to peaceful relations and greater economic opportunity.
A stable and prosperous Pakistan should not be viewed as a strategic loss for India, just as a strong India should not be seen as a threat to Pakistan. Economic growth in one country can create new markets, investment opportunities, and regional prosperity for the other.
