@dariusryankadem: A 2.5 year old does not yet understand empathy in the mature sense of deliberately taking another person’s perspective, regulating their own impulse, and choosing a response based on what someone else may be feeling. Yeh, that's a mouthful, right? Because its a complex capacity. They may show early concern or react to another child’s distress, but the capacities required for consistent empathic behaviour are still developing. The first skill we can strengthen is emotional awareness, helping them notice that other people have feelings and that those feelings can be read through facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, and behaviour. We do not build this awareness simply by telling a child to be kind and share. We build it by repeatedly drawing their attention to what is happening and asking open ended questions. These questions train observation before they demand understanding or action. Over time, as language, impulse control, emotional regulation, and perspective-taking develop, that growing awareness gives the child the foundation they need to respond with greater empathy. Also as a preschool teacher, some kids process “sharing” as “I get whatever I want when I want it” while other kids interpret sharing as “I don’t get anything I want and have to give everything away” which is why I utilize turn taking over sharing, everyone gets a reasonable amount of time with everything. The younger kids in my class take awhile to adjust, but the older kids understand that when we have a lot of toys you don’t need all of them or if we only have one type of toy, you can’t have it the whole time and you have to wait until the other person is done with it.

I like teaching children the skills to do something themselves rather than directly teaching them what to do
(in this case, empathy and problem solving rather than just "sharing")
you're raising a person! I love when kids have the understanding to decipher a situation and come up with potential solutions by themselves
I hope I can do this for my future kids as well

This is also one of the concepts in Indonesia's Fitrah-Based Education (an Islamic educational approach). It teaches that, before the age of seven, a child's sense of self should be nurtured by allowing them to make age-appropriate choices, respecting their ownership, and not expecting them to constantly give in. It also places special emphasis on the father's role in affirming the child's confidence and identity. The goal isn't to raise selfish children, but children with a secure sense of self who can set healthy boundaries, express their own needs, and are less likely to become people pleasers later in life.

Theres a fine line between having simple empathy and completely destroying yourself, your home and your community for the less fortunate. Remember to teach that as well.
