I supervised a home for men who were developmentally disabled. It was difficult for one man who had no concept of time. He believed the day after Halloween was Thanksgiving. Then of course the next day was Christmas Eve.

Another client talked about wanting to be sure we made 2 pies , if not more for Thanksgiving. Then of course questions about when do we get the tree? Is Santa coming to our house? Will he find us? Do l get to put a stocking up for Santa? Each year l only had one client home for Christmas. The other 3 all had somewhere to go. It just was so sad. I worked Christmas, then took time off afterwards to be with my 2 kiddos. They understood. They were very much loved by me and they knew my client’s struggled all year long with different issues. My daughter ended up doing exactly what l did. She started as a volunteer in high school in the special needs classroom.
