تمضي راعية الغنم مع أول ضوء الصباح تتهادى بين الوديان والشعاب وعصاها بيدها تراقب قطيعها وهو ينتشر على سفوح الجبال وبين الأعشاب وإذا ابتعدت عنها شاة أو تفرّق القطيع أطلقت نداء غريباً لا يشبه الكلام صوتاً طويلاً مموجاً يتردد صداه بين الصخور فتألفه الغنم وتعرفه فتلتفت إليه وتعود متجمعة حولها وكأن الوادي كله يحفظ ذلك النداء فيحمله من جبل إلى جبل حتى يخال السامع أنه لحن قديم لا تعرفه إلا الراعية وغنمها.

In fact, she calls her goats using unique melodies and wordless sounds that can’t even be written down. To us, it just sounds like music, but the goats recognize them perfectly as commands to stay close! It makes sense, too—many shepherds only name the herd leaders to keep everyone in line.
