Almost none of the thoughts you had today were actually yours. That's not an insult. It's just how a mind gets built, and noticing it is the first real freedom you get. The opinions you'll defend at dinner. The tastes you call "just who I am." The standards you measure your whole life against. Most of them were installed long before you ever chose them — by family, by school, by the feed you scroll before your eyes are even fully open. You inherited a script and mistook it for a self. Try it right now. Take one strong belief you hold and trace it back to where it started. Usually you can't find the moment you decided it. There's no memory of choosing. You just absorbed it from the air around you, and later, once it was yours, you got clever at finding reasons to keep it. That's the uncomfortable part. We don't adopt beliefs because we reasoned our way in. We soak them up, then reverse-engineer the logic to defend what we already caught like a cold. This isn't a reason to despair or to trust nothing. It's the opposite. You can't question a program you don't even know is running. The moment you can see it, you can finally decide what to keep, and for the first time some of it will actually be a decision. So here's the one experiment worth doing. Pick a single belief today, something you feel sure about. Ask, plainly, where it came from. If the best answer you can find is "everyone knows that," you've just located something worth examining. The examined thought is the only one that was ever really yours. Everything else you're just renting from the people who raised you. ... Being "yourself" doesn't start at birth. It starts the day you notice how little of you was ever self-chosen.
