People like to see Peter suffer, because it's lore accurate. He has always suffered in the comics, and we want comic accuracy on the big screen.

I think it's mostly because some of the best spider-man stories are when Peter is suffering, like he has to be in the trenches for the story to be either a masterpiece or near it.

I don't think it's that we enjoy watching him suffer, but rather that we want to see him overcome that situation. I think it's because many of us have very tough days when we simply want to give up, and Spider-Man is a character that's very easy to identify with. Seeing him go through the worst day of his life and still remain optimistic and get back up somehow gives us hope and motivation to keep going.
