Much has been made in our society about the “pretty privilege”, or the idea that being seen as beautiful gives you access to a life you wouldn’t have been able to experience otherwise. In this way, we see beauty as a pathway to happiness. We’ll get more attention, more likes and comments, in addition to more power and autonomy. We think it will validate that we’re worth something. Sociologist Lisa Wade once said, “There is really nothing like knowing that someone wants us. We are told to love ourselves, to love our bodies, but this is no substitute. The pleasure of being desired has to come from the desire of someone else. And there’s no doubt that it can feel amazing.” But with every privilege, comes downsides. In this way, the desire for beauty is just another version of the grass is greener on the other side. As we explore in Episode 4 of the Mighty Pursuit Podcast with supermodel Michelle Ivana, being seen as beautiful can make you subject to harassment, to people who just want to use your for your body, in addition to people not taking you seriously. As Halle Berry once put it, “being thought of as a beautiful woman has spared me nothing in life. No heartache, no trouble. Love has been difficult.” And unfortunately, beautiful women are often (wrongly) treated as unintelligent. When we are fixated on our appearance and beauty, we don’t think about these things. We look at beauty with rose-colored glasses and idolize it as this ultimate destination, but it’s simply not the truth. All of this heightens the need for us to learn to accept and love ourselves as we are and as we look right now. To be grateful for the privileges that we have right now, even if we don’t look like a model. Worth is not dependent on our physical appearance. Worth is inherent to simply being human, even if other people don’t recognize that worth in you. Although this is not easy mindset to embody, especially in the climate we live in, this is where true contentment and confidence becomes possible.
