@sagalensfilms: In November 1519, a column of Spanish soldiers climbed a freezing mountain pass between two snow-capped volcanoes. They had marched for months through jungle and war. They thought they had seen everything the new world could show them. Then they reached the top of the pass and looked down. Below them, rising out of a vast blue lake, was a white stone city larger than anything in Spain. Larger than Seville. Larger than almost anything in Europe. Two hundred thousand people. Dead-straight causeways, each several miles long, ran across open water toward it. Canals threaded between the buildings instead of streets. Thousands of canoes moved through the city like blood through veins. Gardens floated on the lake itself, anchored to the lakebed. Above it all rose a great pyramid crowned with twin shrines, catching the morning sun. Bernal Díaz, a foot soldier in that column, wrote about that moment decades later. He said the city seemed like "an enchanted vision from the tale of Amadis" — the fantasy novel of their age. Hardened soldiers, men who had survived battles and shipwrecks, turned to each other on that mountain pass and asked whether they were dreaming. They were looking at one of the largest cities on Earth — engineered on top of a lake by a civilisation Europe didn't know existed. Within two years, almost none of it was left standing. Díaz wrote that too, as an old man: everything he saw that morning was destroyed. The dream lasted two years. The men who saw it never forgot it.
