Is this the most beautiful place in Ethiopia? Harar Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and my favorite place so far in Ethiopia! 🫶🏼 Walking through the maze of Harar Old Town, also known as Harar Jugol, feels like stepping back in time. This walled city in eastern Ethiopia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most unique places I’ve ever visited. Surrounded by ancient walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries, Harar is often called the 'fourth holiest city of Islam'. at least that is what I was told… ✌🏼 Within these walls you’ll find 82 mosques (some dating back to the 10th century!) and over 100 shrines, tucked between vibrant houses painted in bold colors and decorated with beautiful Harari patterns. Lately the Harrari government has done a lot of effort in preserving this incredible place. Every corner of Harar tells a story: narrow alleys that open into lively markets, traditional Harari homes with intricate interiors, and historic gates that once controlled entry into the city. The mix of African, Islamic, and even Indian architectural influences makes Harar unlike any other city in Ethiopia. it reminded me a little bit of Stonetown in Zanzibar. But Harar isn’t just about history, it’s a living, breathing heritage. The local community keeps ancient traditions alive through weaving, basket making, and the famous hyena feeding ritual that takes place just outside the city walls every night. It’s easy to see why UNESCO recognized Harar Jugol as a cultural treasure in 2006. Walking here is like exploring a giant open-air museum, where history, culture, and daily life come together in the most authentic way. 📍 Harar Old Town (Harar Jugol), Ethiopia – a destination every culture lover should add to their bucket list. Sorry to give you another reason to travel to Ethiopia! 😉❤️🇪🇹 #e#ethiopiat#travel
