@mindwar6: Part 1|The Strongest Storm to Ever Hit the Carolinas — Hugo 1989 #HurricaneHugo #Carolinas #Documentary #HistoryTok #fyp #USHistory On the night of September 21st, 1989, the most powerful hurricane to strike the Carolinas in a generation came ashore just north of Charleston. But it wasn't the coast that told the real story of Hugo. It was everything the storm did after it should have weakened – a wall of water nearly 20 feet high that swallowed the town of McClellanville, hurricane-force winds still tearing roofs apart in Charlotte almost 200 miles inland, and families trapped in a school shelter who climbed into the rafters as the water rose toward the ceiling. What followed became the storm that broke every rule about how far a hurricane can reach.#trending
I was 13 when Hugo hit Charlotte and I woke my mom up and said I was worried about the trees falling. She responded with, there's no way the storm will be that strong by the time it reaches Charlotte. We were without power for over two weeks.

For all those blaming weather on “the government” you can clearly see we’ve had powerful hurricanes since the beginning of time.

I was working for the airlines in Baltimore—we were going in the crew room asking pilots in blue jeans what aircraft they were qualified on to fly our fleet out of Baltimore.

Lived in Sumter, SC. I was in a single wide trailer. Woke during the night to my home swaying like a boat. We were without power for 2 weeks. I’ll ever forget it.

I was 4 and remember this. We lost power for a long time and a few mature trees fell in our yard blocking our driveway. Absolutely terrifying

I was little and lived with my mom in the mountains of NC on the New River. The trees were bent sideways from the wind. We evacuated and I remember standing on the big cement bridge on the way out and feeling it shake while staring at the huge wall of water roaring down the valley where the calm river used to be. Shortly after that the bridge became covered. It had risen at least 20’. We were flooded out of our house for a while…we were ~295 miles inland 👀

I live at least 200 nautical miles inland in NW NC in foothills of the mountains. Sept 22, 1989, we had lots of damage from Hugo. It was a helluva storm!

My little stick built house and I survived 80 mph sustained winds in York County, SC. The first time in my life I honestly thought I was going to die. I was 33, am now 70 and will never forget that day.
