@drnaureenalim: Can autoimmune diseases go into remission? Yes - but the answer is more nuanced than most people realize. Remission doesn't mean an autoimmune disease has disappeared. It means there is little or no active disease. Depending on the condition, that may mean: - No symptoms - Minimal inflammation - Stable laboratory markers - No ongoing organ or joint damage The likelihood of remission depends on the autoimmune disease itself. Some diseases naturally have a relapsing-remitting course, while others damage tissues that have little ability to regenerate, making remission much harder to achieve. Even within rheumatology, the answer varies. • In lupus, complete medication-free remission is uncommon, so treatment often aims for remission **or** a low disease activity state. • In ANCA-associated vasculitis, some patients have successfully discontinued immunosuppressive therapy while remaining in remission. One of the most exciting areas of autoimmune research is the idea of an “immune reset." Emerging therapies such as autologous stem cell transplantation and CAR-T cell therapy are showing that, in carefully selected patients with severe autoimmune disease, long-term drug-free remission may be possible. These treatments are still reserved for select patients and aren't appropriate for most people today, but they're changing the way we think about the future of autoimmune disease. The goal has always been to help people live well with autoimmune disease. Increasingly, we're asking an even bigger question: **How close can we get to lasting remission?** ⬇️ Save this post if you've ever wondered whether remission is possible, and follow for evidence-based autoimmune education. . #remission #autoimmunedisease

i was recently diagnosed with autoimmune disease but id love to do clinical car t cell therapy for it. if it works for severe cases, i don’t see why early cases wouldn’t work? seems like it could set me into long term remission also, and prevent inevitable damage. i don’t want to have to be in SEVERE conditions to be treated

Real Lupus Life :
You said complete medication-free remission is uncommon with lupus. Will you clarify if this means literally no medications? Or are you just referring to drugs meant to treat active lupus disease activity? This might seem silly to ask, but I have found the little nuances often take me a while to really understand because rheumatology doesn't follow any of the "rules" of getting sick and then getting treatment that I understood before I was diagnosed with SLE in 2019. Now I'm still trying to learn 😊

lol, in the uk we have the NHS which in principle is envied across the world - however, the truth is you can wait years for your referral, months for your first treatment, years for your second and it could be 3-4 years before you get biologics by which time the damage is irreversible.

My lupus and autoimmune interstitial lung disease are in remission, and I've been completely off of immunosuppressants (mychophenolate/CellCept) for 1 year and 8 months, but I do still take hydroxychloroquine daily. It took 5 years on CellCept with 4 years at the highest dose and then a year of tapering.
