I kinda understand WHY they left the ethnic cleansing out? It takes place in a modern world in which minorities are mostly accepted. I feel like Gilead would find the cleansing a problem especially when it comes to converting people to their religion and deeming it ‘too much’ and it wouldn’t persuade others to join their cause. I’m not glazing Gilead for being ‘inclusive’, because I would 100% see a cleansing if they had a future. However, they’re more worried about controlling ALL women regardless, and babies. Do people understand what I’m saying?

I think had they included the ethnic cleansing and racism a lot of people wouldn’t have watched or would’ve deemed it purely fiction and “oh that’ll never happen”. I think by including every race it allows us to see ourselves in these characters, to see our world today transcending into gilead. By including all races the shows forces us to look into a mirror in every single episode, making it harder for us to ignore the fact this is becoming our reality. I personally think the racial atrocities however are very important to mention and to acknowledge that it has always been people of color that have suffered the most in times of revolution, war, and violence like this.

They only very briefly touched on it in a passing comment by aunt Lydia, and even that is HIGHLY watered down. They’re deciding where to place handmaids and she says one couple didn’t want a handmaid of color. But that’s literally the ONLY mention of anything sort of race-related

i feel that if they maintained the ethnic cleansing aspect, people wouldn't notice. making the cast noticably multi-racial helps to keep the focus where they want it

I don't mind the direction the show went. It was dark enough as it was. I also don't mind it being in the book because we have been and many are currently racist and if we don't remember our history we will forget

I noticed in the show you see far more daughters than sons/young men. While obviously the girls are the focus in societies like these men who aren’t at the top are highly disposable. I don’t doubt many economen have been quietly disappeared etc if they had a particularly fertile wife or had daughters the system wanted.
