Another striking difference in this footage from 50 years ago is that carnival appeared to carry a message. The costumes, music and performances were often built around historical events, cultural traditions or social issues, allowing the celebration to entertain while also educating and telling the story of a people. - That depth seems less visible in much of carnival today, where appearance, exposure and spectacle can sometimes overshadow meaning. Creativity is still present, but creativity without a story can easily become performance without substance. - Carnival was never meant to be only about costumes and partying; it was also a living expression of history, resistance, identity and community. Perhaps true progress would not be abandoning the modern celebration, but restoring the cultural purpose and storytelling that once gave it greater meaning. Bless 🙏

I miss when it was more family friendly when I was a kid. My grandparents used to say “carnival is a celebration of love, culture and family”. Now it’s just a giant drunk party with thong bikinis lol

I used to love flying into Piarco and seeing my grandparents in the waving gallery when we took the stairs off of the airplane and walked on the runway to the airport. Sweet memories!
