Change your anode rod at the same time. This will also extend the life.

You should flush your water heater every year yes! But if you miss years or have never flushed it before you really shouldn’t. Allows air into the tank and lets the rust expand and creates cracks. As a plumber when I get called out to flush a unit I always ask if they did it last year.
