also 3PO clearly got his memory wiped by the time the opening events of A New Hope happened since hes clueless as to why R2 has this whole mission to find Obi Wan which in a way I find symbolizes the death of Padme. R2 never returning to Anakin as Darth Vader symbolizes the death of who he was before Palpatine destroyed his mind.
