1. Start your licensing process immediately. Don't wait months after graduation. I began by choosing the province I wanted to apply through and started my credential evaluation with WES. I also completed my nursing verification through NMCN, submitted all the required documents, and stayed on top of every email and deadline. 2. Study strategically for the NCLEX. Passing the NCLEX is important, but don't just memorize questions. Focus on understanding prioritization, safety, delegation, pharmacology, and clinical judgment. Once I passed, it opened up so many opportunities. 3. Don't limit yourself to one province. I initially applied through Alberta but kept my options open. I expanded my search to Ontario and British Columbia because I knew increasing my options would increase my chances of getting hired. 4. Build a Canadian-style resume and LinkedIn profile. This is one mistake I see so many internationally educated nurses make. Your resume should highlight measurable achievements, transferable nursing skills, and be tailored to every job you apply for. I also optimized my LinkedIn profile because recruiters actually search there. 5. Network intentionally. Networking isn't just sending random connection requests. I connected with nurse recruiters, hiring managers, fellow IENs, and healthcare professionals. Sometimes one conversation can lead to an opportunity you never expected. 6. Use Health Match BC if you're considering British Columbia. This was one of the biggest game changers for me. I registered with Health Match BC, completed my profile, and connected with a recruitment consultant who guided me through available opportunities. They helped match my skills with positions that suited my experience and made the job search much less overwhelming. 7. Apply broadly, but apply smart. Don't apply to only ICU because that's where you worked back home. Be open to medical-surgical units, telemetry, surgical units, rehabilitation, long-term care, emergency, community health, and other specialties. Getting your foot in the door is often the hardest part. 8. Prepare for interviews before you get invited. I practiced behavioral questions, clinical scenarios, conflict resolution, teamwork, leadership, and patient safety questions. By the time interviews came, I wasn't scrambling to prepare, I was ready. 9. Don't underestimate Canadian experience. While working toward my RN goals, I volunteered in healthcare to better understand the Canadian healthcare system, improve my communication, and gain local references. Every experience counts. 10. Stay consistent. There were moments when I questioned if it would happen, but I kept applying, learning, improving my resume, networking, and showing up. Eventually, I received the job offer I had been working toward. Today, I'm a Canadian RN, and I know how overwhelming this journey can feel because I've lived it.
