Just to be clear, because the bots are wild, these data centers are not about AI or average person's phone usage. These centers are for mass surveillence and/or owning the infrastructure for rent seeking now and later once the ladder gets pulled up behind them and the door is slammed and locked shut for competition. The actual useful AI and other businesses that come later, the ones actually solving cancer and benefitting humanity, will have to pay rent to these people who rushed in to stake out their parcel of land in the hopes it ends up being valuable (land is finite and these data center projects costs are all offset by massive tax breaks and subsidies, much of which is funded by the public, but the profits from the rent seeking of which the public will never see). It's opportunistic and parasitic behaviour. Depleting resources not for the benefit of society, but for private hoarding. The people, the local communities, get left with the consequences, cleaning up the messes left behind by these billionaires, all while only receiving maybe the equivalent of a doggy treat and a pat on the head at most and that is only if they get anything at all. If the billionaires really want these, then they should have to provide >50% of the profits from these centers to the local community to be invested into that community and benefit everyone in it.
