You run in running shoes. Good. You lift in running shoes? Please stop it. I see fighters squatting, deadlifting, lunging, jumping… in marshmallows strapped to their feet. Then you wonder why knees hurt, ankles roll.
Why force transfer sucks, and power looks soft. Here’s the issue. A running shoe is built for forward motion and cushioning, designed to absorb force and roll you heel to toe. Great for logging miles, terrible for producing force into the ground. When you squat or deadlift, you want:
1) A stable base
2) Minimal compression
3) Direct force transfer
4) Real ground feedback Running shoes compress under load, that soft foam collapses, your foot is now unstable, arch works overtime, ankle shifts, knee tracks weird, hip compensates, and you leak force everywhere. It’s like trying to lift heavy while standing on a mattress. Now add plyometrics? You want stiffness.
Reactivity.
Elastic return. Running shoes dampen that.
They literally absorb the power you’re trying to express. For fighters especially… You spend hours building force through the ground.
Why train that on unstable foam? Functional training shoes are:
- Flatter
- Wider
- More stable
- Built for lateral movement
- Designed for multidirectional force That’s why I like Reebok Nanos or TYRs. Not because brand matters, but because stability matters. And if you don’t want to buy anything? Lift barefoot. Actually, for pure strength work, barefoot is often better than lifting in a soft running shoe, better ground contact, and better foot mechanics. Just use the right tool for the job…. Run in running shoes.
Lift in stable shoes.
Or lift barefoot. But again, STOP squatting on clouds. #performance #fighter #strengthandconditioning #muaythai #trainingshoes
