Men say God was silent for four hundred years between the words of Malachi and the arrival of Matthew. Four hundred years with no prophet standing in the public square. No fresh scroll being written. No voice crying, "Thus says the Lord." And because of this, many men have concluded that there are seasons in life when God becomes silent. Worse still, absent. I struggle with that thought. For how can a man live even a single breath outside the presence of the One who sustains breath itself? Perhaps what we call silence is often something else. Perhaps it is our habit of measuring God's presence through what our hands can hold. A man receives a promotion and we say, "God has blessed him." Another finds a wife and we say, "The favour of God rests upon him." Another buys land, builds a house, drives a fine vehicle, and we point to the evidence and call him blessed. But when the job disappears, when the proposal fails, when the bank account grows thin, when prayers seem to rise no higher than the ceiling, suddenly the language changes. God is silent. God is absent. God has forgotten me. Yet I wonder whether we have confused blessings with possessions. A blessed man is not blessed because he has bread in his hands. He is blessed because he remains God's even when his hands are empty. A tree planted beside a stream is not less a tree because winter arrives. There are seasons when it carries fruit that bends its branches. There are seasons when leaves dance in the wind and fall to the ground. There are seasons when it stands stripped bare, looking almost dead to the untrained eye. Yet through every season, the roots remain in the water. The stream has not moved. The source has not vanished. The tree is still being sustained, even when there is no fruit for others to admire. A child does not doubt his mother exists simply because she is not speaking. He sleeps because somewhere in the darkness he knows she is near. Yet men, strange creatures that we are, can mistake the lack of gifts for the lack of a giver. We have become accountants of blessing. We count houses. We count promotions. We count wedding rings. We count titles before our names. What if blessing was not something placed in a man's hands, but something woven into his being? So when a man says God is silent, I do not argue with him. I simply wonder if he has mistaken winter for death.
