My favorite part is right after the heartfelt father-son reunion, they are immediately like "okay, let's end your mother's suitors"

When we read it in middle school it was interpreted as very silly but when I read it in college it was very heavy, sad and longing. I think it certainly has a flexible nature to it.

i feel like this is something that i've seen noteably male dude-bro esque writers/ directors that have a chip on their shoulder often fail to realize is what makes these kinds of stories, epics, and even tragedies so great and stand the test of time. By having the light silly moments it adds so much more depth and gravity to those intense and dramatic moments and in trying to take it too seriously they water it down. The moments meant to hit get lost without the ups to highlights the downs and vice versa. Without the sillies the epics don't epic the same they're no longer an epic but a gritty flat drama without the range that made them so great in the first place

I think it's best to let there be an anime series about the Iliad because I can't think a better way to illustrate an Iliad duel without sounding like a shonen fight

I really wish more people were able to connect with Homer’s work because genuinely when I read The Odyssey, I’m smiling the whole time

The pun Odysseus tells to Polyphemus to piss him off was too goofy for the tone of the movie and they couldn’t make it work, which is very funny to me

Prob the equivalent of Star Wars, or comic book superheroes today if future aliens discovered records of them 3000 years from now

just because it's called an Epic, doesn't mean it has to be self-serious but nooooo someone thought it was a good idea to hire Christopher Nolan That same person probably wants to hire David Cronenberg to make a family-friendly sitcom

Right so just like Batman Nolan has to take something camp and turn it into yet another “gritty reboot” 🙄

it was fun and there's nothing wrong with a storyteller coming along and adding their own verses to the song of Odysseus as so many have done before.

So many people fail to understand that the Odyssey and Odysseus himself aren’t just one thing. The Odyssey is about the aftermath of war, going home, overcoming hubris, etc, but it’s also very whimsical and weird and funny! Odysseus is meant to be a great warrior and a clever trickster that makes friends easily, and would probably still be smiling while he stabbed you in the back (and there are very few who would be exempt from such treatment), while AlSO being someone who feels great sorrow over all the death and loss. He is the ‘man of many ways’ for a reason, and that includes him having a sense of humor. He contains both great joy and great sadness. Capable of great cruelty and kindness. You can’t just do one or the other, and if you do you’re just making him less interesting.

The historian/comedian Natalie Haynes has done stand-up comedy about the Ancient Greco-Roman world and mythology and has done quick summaries of both the Iliad and Odyssey. One of my favorite lines is "Book 16: MENELAUS DOES SOMETHING USEFUL!" she's even done episodes on historical figures and Pompeii!

I always thought that there is a big dollop of James Bond vibe in the poem, and that it is just entertainng same way. you can almost hear the James Bond theme when Odysseus enters a new situation. Those films don't take themselves seriously either.
