@maeniaraa: When people ask for directions in San Isidro, nobody says, "Turn left after the chapel." They say "Ask Winter." Because somehow Winter knows everything. Need someone to harvest rice because your husband caught a fever? Call Winter. Need a tricycle pushed uphill? Winter's already there before you ask. Need a chicken caught after it escaped your backyard? "Ay, si Winter na bahala." Lost your slipper in the river? "Nakita na ni Winter." The mayor once joked that if Winter ever ran for office, everyone would resign because there'd be nothing left to do. At twenty-four, Winter Mendoza is practically the unofficial mascot of the town. Ever since both of her parents passed away when she was thirteen, the entire town quietly decided something without ever saying it out loud. If Winter lost her family... Then San Isidro would become hers. Every kids wave at her. Every lola had a plate waiting for her. Every lolo secretly slipped her pocket money despite her refusing every single time. Even the carabaos somehow follow her. She had thirty-eight grandmothers. Forty-three grandfathers. Twenty-seven aunties who claimed she was too skinny. And enough uncles to embarrass her every day. She's the province's favorite child. Meanwhile Karina Ledezma to everyone in Manila—is the complete opposite. Designer clothes. Perfect manicure. Coffee that costs more than an entire day's grocery in the province. She has never • washed clothes by hand. • climbed a coconut tree. • seen a rice field up close. • walked somewhere if there was a car available. Her biggest struggle in life is when the café runs out of oat milk. One random Monday Her grandmother suddenly called. "Come stay with me here, hija." "For how long lola?" "As long as your heart needs." Karina sighed dramatically. "Lola... your town doesn't even have Starbucks." "But it has me." Well. How do you argue with that? The moment Karina steps out of the bus... Everyone turns to look. Not because she's famous. But because she's wearing... White pants. White sneakers. A white cardigan. In a muddy province. The locals collectively inhale. One auntie whispers "Ang ganda naman nya para maging probinsyana." "Karina?" Karina turns around. Standing beside an old pickup truck is someone wearing faded overalls, slippers, and a bucket hat. Hair tied into a messy ponytail. Smiling like sunshine. "Hi!" "I'm Winter." "Your grandma sent me." Karina blinks. "You're picking me up?" "Mhm." "Where's the car?" Winter points proudly. "This is the car." Karina stares at the old pickup. "Is it supposed to make that sound?" The engine coughs violently. Winter pats the dashboard. "She's just excited." The first thing Karina notices... Everyone knows Winter. Literally everyone. "Morning, Winter!" "Winter! Kain tayo!" "Winter! Yung pato mo nakatakas na naman!" "Winter! Thank you sa pag ayos ng bubong namin!" "Winter! Pakisabi sa lola mo bukas pupunta ako!" Then an old lady suddenly opens the truck door while it's stopped. "Winter, apo." "Po?" "Tanghalian mo." "Ay, La, nakakahiya." "Tapos ito" She pinches Winter's cheek. "Kasi ang cute mo." Then leaves. Karina stares. "Did you just get adopted on spot?" Winter sighs. "It happens." Karina quietly asks "Are you secretly the mayor?" Winter laughs. "No." "The mayor asks me for help." When they arrived at Karina's grandmother's house Winter had barely opened the gate when... BWAAAAAK! Something white launched itself straight at Karina's face. "WAAAAAH!" She dropped her luggage. Started running in circles. "WINTER!" "IT'S FLYING!" "WHY DOES IT FLY?!" The chicken chased her with surprising determination. Winter doubled over laughing. "Chicky!" "Stop bullying Ms. Pretty!" Instead The chicken flapped even harder. Karina hid behind Winter, gripping her shoulders. "MAKE IT GO AWAY!" "I'M TRYING!" "IT HAS BAD INTENTIONS!" —continuation; Right then... Her grandmother stepped outside. "Oh." "Chicky's welcoming you." "...That's welcoming?" "Mhm." "She likes pretty people." Karina looked at the chicken. The chicken looked back. "...I don't like her." The chicken clucked loudly. Winter translated with a completely straight face. "She said she doesn't like you either." Her grandmother hugs Winter first. Then Karina. "My two granddaughters are finally together." Karina freezes. "...Two?" "Of course." "We've has been taking care of Winter since she was thirteen." "When your grandfather died..." "She made sure I never ate alone." Winter scratches her neck. "Lola..." "I'm just nearby." Her grandmother smiles mischievously. "So now..." "You take care of my city granddaughter, while she's here." Winter salutes dramatically. "Aye! Aye! Mission accepted, lola." Karina narrows her eyes. "I don't like the way you said that." The next morning. 4:57 AM. "KOKOROOKOOOOOO!" Karina buried herself deeper into the pillow. Then— Winter's radio. ♫ Girl you're every woman in the wor— The volume could probably be heard in the next barangay. Karina shot upright. She stormed toward the window. "Winter!" Winter looked up while sweeping the yard. "Morning!" "TURN THE RADIO OFF!" "OKAY!" "And tell that chicken—" She pointed dramatically at Chicky. "IF SHE CROWS ONE MORE TIME I'M BREAKING HER NECK, HER WINGS, AND TURNING HER INTO FRIED CHICKEN!" Winter looked at Chicky. Chicky looked at Winter. Winter nodded solemnly. "...She understands." An hour later... Karina finally wandered into the kitchen. Winter was slicing tomatoes and salted eggs. "You can help." "Finally." "I'm useful." "Mhm." "Wash the tomatoes." "Easy." Five minutes passed. Winter walked over. Paused. "...Karina." "Hm?" "Why are there bubbles?" Karina looked confused. "They're cleaner." "You..." "...washed them with dishwashing liquid." "...Is that... not normal?" Winter laughed so hard she had to lean against the counter. "I've never met anyone like you." Breakfast was ready. Karina looked around. "Where's Lola?" "Barangay hall." "She has duty." "Duty?"

Janhae was the varsity girl with the messy hair, confident walk, and that look that made people move out of her way. She could be handsome one day, pretty the next, and somehow both at the same time. Girls liked her. But Janhae barely noticed. Because there was only one girl she actually wanted to impress. Jingjing. Council president. Smart, responsible, beautiful, and always busy. She's rock-heartedbas others describe, which made Janhae's mission much harder. Still, Janhae never gave up. “Jingjing.” “Why?” “I got you something.” Jingjing looked at the paper bag. “Again?” “Yes.” Inside was her favorite snack. “You really don't have to keep doing this.” “I know.” “Then why?” Janhae scratched the back of her neck. “Because..I want to.” Jingjing looked away, hiding the small smile forming on her face. “Thank you.” Janhae smiled. “Anything for you.” “Don't say things like that.” “Why?” “Ang cheesy, Jan.” “I'm trying to impress you.” “That is exactly why.” Janhae laughed. It didn't stop there. She left little notes on Jingjing's desk. Good luck sa meeting! Miss you, ganda. You're gorgeous. And one morning:

It didn't stop there. She left little notes on Jingjing's desk. Good luck sa meeting! Miss you, ganda. You're gorgeous. And one morning: "I saw you from across the hallway. You looked pretty. Okay, bye." -Jan Jingjing stared at the note for a few seconds then folding it and putting it inside her notebook. Her friends noticed. “You're keeping her letters?” “Papel lang to.” “You're smiling.” “No.” “You are.” Jingjing immediately stopped smiling. Unfortunately, Janhae saw everything. Later that day, she walked beside Jingjing. “You smiled because of my letter.” “I didn't.” “You did.” “Prove it.” “No need, I saw it.” Jingjing rolled her eyes. “You're confident” “I have to be. You don't make it easy.” That made Jingjing quiet. Janhae continued, softer this time. “I know you don't like attention, so I'm trying not to bother you too much.” “You bring me food.” “That's caring.” “And the gifts?” “Caring.” “The letters?” “Very caring.” Jingjing laughed. “Unbelievable.” Janhae grinned. “But you still keep everything.” Jingjing stopped walking. “I saw your notebook.” “You looked?” “Accidentally.” “Sinungaling” “Okay, maybe a little.” Jingjing shook her head smiling. Then a girl from another class approached her. “Janhae, free ka after practice?" “Sorry,” Janhae interrupted politely. “I have plans.” The girl looked at Jingjing, then walked away. Jingjing raised an eyebrow. "Plans?” Janhae smiled. “Walking you home.” “You didn't even ask me.” “Still, I want to.” Jingjing laughed softly. “You're really something.” “Is that a yes?” She looked at Janhae. “Fine" Janhae tried not to smile too much. They walked together, shoulders almost touching. Jingjing quietly said, “Janhae.” “Hm?” “I like the letters.” Janhae looked at her. “Really?” “Yes.” “Which one?” “Everything.” Janhae smiled. Jingjing looked away, clearly trying to hide her smile. Janhae noticed. “Again.” “What?” “Your smile” “Stop looking.” “Can't.” “Why?” Janhae shrugged, smiling at her. “You're cute.” Jingjing covered her face with one hand. “Grabe ka.” Janhae laughed. Days passed, Jingjing became less annoyed by Janhae's attention. And sometimes, she was the one looking for Janhae first. One afternoon, Janhae found Jingjing waiting outside the gym. “Why are you here?” “Hinihintay ka.” Janhae froze. “Ako?” “Yes.” A huge smile appeared on Janhae's face. Jingjing immediately looked away. “Don't make that face.” “What face?” “Basta 'yan!” “Can't help it.” “Why?” Janhae stepped beside her. “You waited for me.” Jingjing smiled softly. “Maybe I wanted to.” Janhae stared at her. Then she suddenly crossed her arms and looked away. “Che!" Jingjing blinked. “What now?” “Nothing.” “Janhae.” “Pusong bato pa rin?” Jingjing laughed. “I've been nice kaya!” “Not enough.” She lightly bumped Janhae's shoulder. “Oo na.” Janhae glanced at her. Jingjing smiled. “I like you na.” Janhae's sulking disappeared instantly. “Ulit nga” “No.” “Please?” “Uwi naa" Janhae followed beside her, grinning “Okay, ganda." Jingjing shook her head, “Ang kulit mo.” “But you like me.” “Unfortunately.” “Yay.” And for once, Janhae didn't care about all the girls waiting for her. She already had the only girl she wanted.
