I’d argue that his performance was fine, but the script was not in his favour at all. Like the emotional writing around him and his tension of not being his father isn’t that good.

I think you are wrong and have fallen into the trap a lot of others have where because Tom Holland actually did his job perfectly, it seems like he was giving a weak performance when in actuality, he was hitting the right beats for his character. At the start, Telemachus is meant to be overpowered, dominated and weak when next to Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson. That's the whole point. The fact you find him better and more commanding by the end of the film shows that Tom successfully pulled off Telemachus' transformation. You wanted him to look and sound more powerful and reacted positively when he was. I genuinely feel like people who make these criticisms just fundamentally misunderstand the character. I'd also say it's not actually Tom Holland's fault if you see him and refuse to separate him from Peter Parker in your mind. That's your lack of imagination.

i thought he handled the boyish, insecure, naivety of telemachus well. he didn’t stand out to me as an especially bad or good performance. i agree that he suffered in that he was often acting against anne hathaway, who was arguably the best performance in the cast. i could not take him seriously in his attempts to discipline the suitors when he comes back from sparta, partly because telemachus is sort of meant to be a laughing stock… but i also just couldn’t shake the feeling that THATS tom holland (think he has a bit of an iphone face?). kind of wish that everyone spoke in their own accent because him doing american was distracting.

Spider-man has definitely hamstrung his ability to be seen as anything but Spiderman. Look at his performance in The Impossible (at what, 13 years old), and it’s clear that he is actually a powerhouse of an actor. I agree that he just needs time to outgrow SM, and stepping into a semi-leading role in one of the biggest films of the last few years, probably wasn’t the best way for that growth to happen organically.

Bare with me here, is there not a part of this that is your inability to view Tom differently? I don't watch Spiderman, therefore never view him as that. Maybe it's YOU who has to allow him to move on? Just a question really. Also..American accents? Why's that?

I dislike the narrative about people not being able to get over people's famous roles like Holland with Spiderman or Henry Cavill possibly getting passed up on bond because of superman. I believe if you cannot get over that role, that is your fault.

I think he captured the insecurity and weakness of Telemachus perfectly, it's not a performance that's meant to shine in the way many of the others do. I think deviating from the kind of performance he gave us in order to "prove" himself would have been disingenuous to the character he was playing and what it needed him to do.
