The disaster killed all 260 people on board and five people on the ground.The crash occurred just two months after the September 11 attacks, initially sparking widespread fears of another terrorist act. However, investigators later determined that the accident was caused by the co-pilot's aggressive and repeated use of the rudder in response to wake turbulence from a preceding Japan Airlines Boeing 747. These abrupt rudder movements placed severe aerodynamic stress on the aircraft, leading to the complete separation of the tail's vertical stabilizer and causing a catastrophic loss of control. The tragic loss of Flight 587 remains the second-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history and led to significant changes in pilot training regarding rudder controls and composite materials.
