Three questions cut through most of the uncertainty around emotional abuse, and none of them require analysing the other person's intentions, just noticing what actually happens to you. The first is whether you feel like you have to manage yourself, your words, your topics, your reactions, just to avoid setting someone off. That constant self-editing isn't a personality trait, it's often exactly what emotional abuse runs on, an unspoken rule that your comfort depends on keeping someone else's discomfort at bay, as though managing their emotions became your job. The second is what happens when you actually voice a feeling or say you've been hurt. In a healthy relationship, that's met with some real effort to understand you. In emotional abuse, it gets turned back on you almost every time, your feelings dismissed as wrong, or the act of speaking up itself becomes the offence, leaving you defending, apologising, or explaining instead of being heard. That exhausting loop of trying to get through and never quite landing is one of the clearest signs of emotional abuse. The third is whether you're consistently left feeling like you're the one who needs fixing for the relationship to work, no matter how gently that message gets delivered. Being told you're too sensitive, too much, too needy, wrapped in concern or wisdom, is still emotional abuse, and it's worth naming as such even when it sounds kind. And if you're already worrying whether you might be the abusive one because you eventually snapped after being pushed to breaking point, that reaction has its own name, and it isn't emotional abuse, it's something entirely different Official accounts and resources: www.ellyanastasiades.com #emotionallyabusiverelationship #relationshipabuse #emotionalabuse #relationshiptok #toxicrelationship
