Thing is, neither the quality of the teams, the “status” of the tournament as “competitive” actually matter in giving the trophy prestige, what matters is the fans and players perceptions of it- and there are 2 things that make the Nations League a glorified friendly tournament: 1. Saturation- International trophies are given their status by exclusivity, not just in who wins them but how often theyre held. Having the world cup and euros 2 years apart, and 4 years apart from their next edition, is a sweet spot for building up tension and giving the tournaments their prestige. The Nations League happening every 2 years and being sandwiched in between each ‘major tournament’ makes it less valuable. Its just what happens before and after the wc/euros, not a standalone tournament to be excited for. 2. History/ Legacy, the Nations League is new and has no legacy, nobody has grown up thinking “my dream is to win a nations league”, obviously this can be built over time but the fact that the origins of the nations league was simply to replace friendlies in the international calendar shows that that is all it really is- taking what were previously friendlies and slapping a trophy on it. Of course id be happy to win it but its not something comparable to actual trophies like the wc /euros
