@askpaindoc: What’s the biggest myth you’ve heard about chronic illness? I’ll go first: “If you don’t look sick, you can’t be sick.” Some of the most challenging conditions don’t have visible signs. Looking healthy has never been a reliable measure of how someone feels. Your turn. What’s a myth you’re tired of hearing? #ChronicPain #InvisibleIllness #ChronicIllness #Spoonie #patientadvocacy
that if I exercise I will get better... 😂😂😂 I can't even walk or stand for more than 10 minutes 😞

Dr: We’re taking you off your drops. Me: oh, so it won’t come back when I stop the drops. Dr: oh no. Also dr: if you have a flare up come back to the ED so we can put you back on the drops to fix it. *the issue is still in my eyes & hasn’t magically gone away* 🙄

("its just anxiety") this one just isn't true
it angers me when people say this because it could be anything lot more to it than that sometimes doctors just need to stop saying its anxiety if they dont know dont label it as anxiety or overreacting I went through hell till I got a diagnosis and it tuck 3 years if not longer

While being examined for my back before physiotherapy sessions, while heavily medicated for the various hernias squeezing my nervous system, so functioning and not in dire pain, the doctor goes "but you don't look like you are serious pain now". YES I have been gobbling opioids for a month! I am used to having at least 2-4 of pain daily, I need a solution that doesn't turn my brain to mush you buffoon! luckily the physiotherapist I met afterwards read through all the exams, and over the course of treatment she gave me the right exercises to try and stay as pain free as possible and also identified that my headaches were not just from my neck, they were migraines. First person in 30 years that gave thought to my frequent headaches. Later I got a proper diagnosis for that too, and right now I know what I got, how to deal with it, and even if it still bars me from several things depending on the day, I know what goes on and how to make it bearable

"You don't look like you've had a kidney transplant" ... 🤔 2) I once got told to leave ITU because visiting hours were over. I was an ITU patient! I was then told: "You don't look ill enough to be an ITU patient" - I had Septic Shock & had just had a kidney transplant.

'don't use your health as an excuse.' When it's physically unsafe for me to work and doing multiple things back to back puts me in a flare-up and I can't get it out of bed.

I was told "you don't have the classic symptoms of this specific illness/disorder, it's impossible for you to have it." Despite the fact that not everyone is going to have textbook symptoms or have something that's going to show up on the first round of tests.
