Just a tip from a whitey. Please do summer school in college. It’s often way cheaper, smaller classes and easier classes. I graduated 1.5 years early just doing summer block. If you don’t plan to work during summer that is.

Thank you. White family here. My daughter is about to head off to college. First one in the family to go. And mom and dad dropped out of school so she had a couple more options to help her. Mom and dad aren't poor poor. But not rich enough to give her a ride through college. I'm so proud of her. We worked hard as heck to not be as poor as my family was when I was little though.

Live in the cheapest dorms- you’ll be surrounded by scholarship kids, international students, and first-gen strivers. Best friends forever (and they won’t wear shoes in the room)

I always tell my biracial daughter going to college for a Agricultural degree, face & name. Networking is critical. She already has two knocks against her. #1 she is a female & #2 she a POC. Make them remember you for your knowledge of your major.

i worked 3 jobs and had an 18 hr class load. plus i had ungodly loans when i got out. and that was 20 years ago! my grades suffered for it. my networking suffered for it. 100% agree dont make him work.

Also besides Spanish, master another language such as Chinese Arabic Portuguese German Japanese or French. Not knocking Spanish but those other languages have a great need for fields of work. Think worldly for employment not just locally here in the USA

I’m neither Black nor male, but a different type of *general* advice? Make sure he can do the little chores. Like work a washer and dryer, make a grocery list, make simple snacks. And make sure he can self-advocate. Can he tell a professor “I’m falling behind and need help?” Or an administrator, “my transcript is wrong and need someone to handle it immediately?” Those aren’t easy
