an american went to japan and learned a lot about efficiency and how to create and continuously improve processes for factories to improve efficiency and production. he then brought these ideas back to our factories and we still follow these processes. what the hell happened to japan? this wasnt even that long ago

I recall when the country’s cyber security chief admitted that he never used a computer. He was just promoted because he had been in the govt for 40 years.

It's not a paradox, working more does not equal to more results. Not having leisure time actively hurts the employer and the employee. It has been known since sociology studies analysed it in the 20s and the 30s

Shin godzilla actually satirizes this aspect of their culture very well. whenever they need to make a decision, a huge group of beaurocrats are gathered and take forever to reach a consensus. by the time they eventually do, it's too late and the problem has gotten worse. very reflective of how things are actually run over there

My ADHD having ass gets 8 hours of work done in 4, every day. My biggest challenge is looking busy. I could not imagine having to do that for another 4 or 5 hours every day.

Its true, they purposely dont modernize and streamline lots of processes so they have more busy work. Looking busy is more important than the actually doing a good job

Hey fellow Hoo! My college kid was just in Japan studying business and came away so disillusioned. He saw and heard everything you shared

When I lived in Japan my coworker and I always joked about every single little thing needing to have forms signed in triplicate before anything can be done. And yes most workers sit around all day pretending to work and then once 5pm hits they actually start lol

Also, even if this is “performance”, these people are not sleeping and are staying overtime. Studies repeatedly show that people are more productive when they are well rested and that overworking to the point of exhaustion predictably becomes LESS productive even if you are technically putting in more hours. There’s a book about this, “Laziness Does Not Exist” by Dr. Devon Price.

Even if you’re trying to work the entire time, the human mind doesn’t work well after working non stop for a few hours.

When I lived in Japan, I went to register my car. It was a ton of paperwork, that was stamped by several people. Then that went to more admin people who stamped it more times. People’s desk were stacked with piles of paperwork. Then in the back wall was stacks several feet high of paper. This was just about everywhere. I wonder if it was to create jobs.

Here’s the thing, I worked in jobs where staying late or “face time” was extremely valued. And what I can say for a fact is that face time is not efficient. The best people can do their job in 40 hours max. Anything above that you are being inefficient

Any good manager knows if you work your employees to the point of exhaustion they are not going to produce good work for you. A well rested, relaxed, happy workforce will always do better quality work
