when I was trying on wedding dresses I got super overwhelmed at the idea of picking the right one. My stylist pulled me into the fitting room privately and said you don’t need the perfect dress you just need a pretty dress. It’s just a dress. And that was very freeing for me ❤️

We are a lesbian couple and we had a large, fun, and objectively expensive wedding. It was important for us given how few of us get to have that. It was also important for our community, families, and the kids to be part of something so special and rare. It was more than just a party.

a lot of people seem to view their own wedding as an opportunity to cosplay having the lifestyle of someone in a massively higher tax bracket. and if you wanna do that, have at it. but it's when they expect everyone else in their life to have to do the same as wedding guests or parts of the wedding party uncomplainingly. if you want to go into crazy debt or blow your life savings on your wedding, that's your choice, but it's gross to pressure people to have to shell out many thousands of dollars just for the privilege of getting to attend or be in your wedding when you KNOW they are not in a "blow thousands of dollars on a party" tax bracket. it's gross to host a "black tie" event when you know that virtually none of the people you're inviting are living a black tie lifestyle and will be an onerous expense for them to have to buy black tie garments just to attend your event while ALSO expecting them to give you a generous gift AND in many cases expecting them to have to take time off work to travel. it's your right to be gross, but it doesn't make you any less gross.

And as it’s a party, we have got to be better at being good hosts instead of pretending like our guests are just extras in a movie about us!!

I turned down a wedding invite this year in part because it was both 1. Across the country and 2. The dress code was wildlyyyyy strict and odd. It just turned me all the way off

people have lost the plot with weddings. they seem to value photos appearing to have a good time over actually having a good time

the best weddings I’ve been to are ones where it was obvious the couple wanted to have a good time with friends and family. They wanted to throw a great party and they did it in their own style, rather than focusing on what a wedding “should” look like.

Majority of weddings I gotten invited too in last few years sending mandatory colors for guest is weird. No I don't want to buy specific colors I will never wear again, things are getting out of hand

You would not believe the amount of pushback I’m having for genuinely just fun things? I want to have 1) a staged combat fight and 2) have an “I am no man” moment at the end. No corralling. No announcement. It’s just gonna happen. Whoever sees it, sees it. You’d think I was saying there wouldn’t be any food.

I really thought during COVID we were moving towards more of a minimalist anti capitalist world. Looks like I’m boo boo the fool

After 9 years together we did a micro wedding in a public garden with a chefs table reservation after. No trips, no bridal parties, just us and our 8 closest people. Best day of my life 🤍✨

never go into debt, mental turmoil, or have outsized expectations of your guests — and otherwise go as big or small as you want

The extremely strict dress code people fascinate me? Maybe bc I’m in the south I don’t see too many not dressed up enough people but I have been to so many galas and nobody cares as much about dress code as people online

True, and I thought Covid had actually reduced people's expectations and costs etc, but now it's ramped right back up. I got married in 2014.

That’s why we had a wedding instead of eloping. The only other time all those people will be in a room will be your funeral, so we threw a great party!

I’m a wedding photographer in France so do quite a bit of destination weddings where couples don’t actually legally (or religiously) get married. It’s mostly vow exchange in front of friends and family. So basically yeah, it’s a party to celebrate the couple.
