@museumofscience: Did you know there are stars orbiting a black hole at the center of the Milky Way? 🌌 Astrophysicist @Prof. Erika Hamden tells us about this star cluster that lives around Sagittarius A* and what it teaches us about the black hole. Scientists have been tracking these stars for decades, watching them complete full orbits. Those orbits are actually how we know the black hole is there, and researchers use them to measure its mass and pin down its exact location. #Space #Astronomy #Science #STEM #BlackHole This project is part of IF/THEN®, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.
Wonder what their speed is if we can track a complete orbit in ten years. Dope.

nice. thank you for this
it's pretty to see the dip into the bell and jet out. I'll find a graphic that shows the math. there is a surface implied.

Partially related: do you know anything about Hooke’s chimney telescope, used to first prove some stars moved?

With them being so close to that gravity well, how is time affected? Like if we see one orbit in say 4 earth years, how long does that take if you were there?

I cannot watch it. A machine can watch it collect data, have the data be compiled by another machine, and then have that new compiled data projected onto an interface as electrons. My eyes will then perceive those electrons as futons, and my visual cortex will create an image. Y’all need to get really specific with how you’re teaching this science less people actually believe the illusion delusion.
