They town and the college grew up together, it's built into the infrastructure. Summer is just a little bit more relaxed.

They do all the construction projects in the summer. You think the kids leave and you can get around town, but nooo. All the roads are closed or under construction 😳🚧

Because the town is built around having extra tens of thousands of people being there 9 months out of the year. The summer is like off season in a tourism town.

To be fair and honest (I lived in a D1 college town my whole growing up) the population uptick is only noticeable during move in, and family weekend. So many older students stay the summers that it’s a barely noticeable change during the school year. There are the growing pains of the first couple weeks where people learn about the annoying one ways streets and which lanes end unexpectedly and then it’s pretty normal actually.

I lived in a SEC college town for 20 years and the way they do it is that summer is the slow season, kinda like an inverse beach town. I loved being a townie, but I hated September so much.

Avoid all stores on move in day and few days before and grocery shop early sunday mornings when they are still asleep or to hungover to move.

You've got it backwards. Students are there for most of the year, so the economy is built around that. They don't need to do anything special to prepare for the population to double, they have to prepare for it to cut in half for the Summer. Source: Lived near Kenyon/MVNU for years.

In my experience, they don’t really. They hire another police officer, make curfews, and implement liquor restrictions. (Remember the premise is small college towns not the big ones)

as someone who lived in Houghton (michigan tech U town) during the summer they get by profiting on tourists, and then businesses hire students when they arrive to meet the needs of higher population in stores/restaurants

The landlords air bnb the college rentals all summer and then move college students in during August. College towns are usually tourist towns.

grew up in a city with multiple colleges within only a couple mins from each other. Just don't go near those parts of town and know that Target will be sold out for at least a month

as someone who grew up in a smallish college town and now goes to a school in a different small college town, They don't, individuals prepare, and if you're smart you'll stay home during orientation week and move in days

I live in one and the locals hate the students. They pass insane alcohol laws and harass the students with law enforcement. All while making tons of money off of them 😡
