Fascia is a thin yet very strong connective-tissue sheath that covers muscles, organs, blood vessels and nerves. It acts as a kind of elastic framework that holds internal structures in place, protects them and allows them to glide smoothly past one another during movement. The main functions of fascia: Support and shape: These connective tissue sheaths prevent muscles from ‘spreading out’, group them together and give the whole body its shape. Protection and shock absorption: Fascia cushions mechanical impacts and prevents inflammation or infection from spreading from one organ (or muscle) to another. Flexibility and force transmission: Healthy, well-hydrated tissue ensures a normal range of motion and transmits force from the contracting muscle to the bones via the tendons. Structural features: Fascia consists of densely packed fibres of collagen and elastin. In the human body, they form a single, continuous network that permeates the entire body from head to fingertips. Essentially, muscles and bones are ‘clad’ in this continuous fascial ‘suit’. What happens when there are problems with the fascia? Due to stress, a sedentary lifestyle, injuries or overuse, the fascia can lose its elasticity, ‘stick’ to muscle fibres and shorten. This leads to: spasms and a feeling of stiffness; pain (for example, the formation of painful trigger points); restricted joint mobility and poor posture. The best-known condition of this kind is plantar fasciitis (often referred to as a ‘heel spur’), in which the thick ligament—the fascia—on the sole of the foot becomes inflamed, causing severe pain when walking. How can you restore the health of your fascia? To improve the elasticity of connective tissue, relieve tension and ‘loosen up’ the fascia, the following are extremely helpful: regular stretching, Pilates and yoga; myofascial massage; and self-massage using special firm rollers and balls (myofascial release). #fyp #viral #thirdposition #romantic #dark
