@glitchgestaltgirl: There’s one thing missing from House of the Dragon that early Game of Thrones had - the game itself. #hotd #houseofthedragon #filmmaking #screenwriting #storytelling
I agree with your synopsis but I wouldn’t say it’s missing that component - it’s intentionally absent. The point of the Targs is kinda that they don’t all have to be competent bc they have dragons and believe themselves different from ordinary men. They aren’t playing the same game as everyone else.

Daemon, Aemond are the only ones playing but they have no voice

People don’t understand that this is what House Targaryen has always been like, the only reason they became kings is because of their dragons, they aren’t considered political masterminds, they win through brute force

They see the dragons got voters viewers so now it’s just dragons.

The House of Dragons is based on a part of my country’s history called The Anarchy a brutal and unforgiving time where law and order collapsed and most of the country was thrown in to a bloody civil war. So that’s basically why it isn’t like the political manoeuvring that you see in Game of Thrones which is based on the Wars of the Roses.

I think they accidentally made stupid characters by trying to make the “good” characters. Removing intentionality and cunning for the sake of creating empathetic characters. I keep they had messed up when they made the child’s death an accident vs intentional

In the first season there was political intrigue between Corlys, the King, and the small council. They were screwing him and he took Daemon as hostage and the army to engage in guerrilla warfare with lepers. But the writing team abandoned the game right then in favor of making their favorite characters likable. They took away Corly’s ambition, made King Vicerys loveable (in the book he is cruel to everyone but family, paranoid, and cuts out people’s tongues), Daemon became literally impotent (which made no sense later), made Rhaenyra and Alicent lovers instead of competitors (which killed the show’s momentum), made Otto (the realm’s smartest man) inoffensively stupid. I don’t like to say this about creatives but of the three teams of writers that split these were the worst.

its telling a different story. the dance is about the decline of the dragons and the targaryn dynasty. a knight of the seven kingdoms is about one man proving he can be a knight. its different stories

I think your take would be good if we were talking about a show that was a remake or an extension of GOT. HOTD is not that, it’s a completely different show , that comes from a book with a completely different structure and purpose of the got original series. The whole series focuses on the tragedy of a stasis (civil war) and not the intricate and scheming politics of court, and while I will agree the show not always gives credit to the characters actual complexity of the books (especially the greens) I don’t think it can be comparend in this regard to got simply because they are in the same universe. Grrm is treating this whole universe as a real series of history and events. You can’t compare the French Revolution to the Irish famine bc they are two completely different events. That’s the same for hotd and got if you see it wiyh the intent of the world building envisioned by grrm imo. Maybe for the general public it might not be as compelling but I find it a breath of fresh air ironically. It was about time that fantasy series stopped glorifying war and showed the horrors of it

another big weakness compared to GOT : most of the interesting stuff is told, not shown.

I love the depiction of reality. I don’t want to see a fairytale sometimes in life, there are no winners just survivors and I’m ok with a show that tells that story

you know the reason that the dance happened was because people made wrong decisions constantly

Season 3 feels like a Shakespearean revenge play. Maybe the point is how terrible war is, how the innocent suffer most, and nobody really wins in the end, they simply find themselves sitting on top of the carnage when it's all over.

I like the HOTD format—the follies of our leaders’ decisions and the grim reality of war and how people are pulled into it? Very of the times. GOT was better for the more prosperous times of ~16yrs ago

this is why I think it compliments knight of the 7 kingdoms well. HOTD looks up at those above "us" and points out their constant wrongdoings, where as KOTSK looks around and the Everyman and celebrates good, even in worlds where it is hard to find.
