@alex_thevet: Your dog's breathing rate could be flagging heart disease weeks before they seem unwell. Resting respiratory rate is one of the earliest changes in dogs with heart disease. When the heart isn't pumping efficiently, fluid can back up around the lungs, and the body compensates by breathing faster. It happens quietly, and it often shows up before your dog is coughing, slowing down, or looking off. Which is exactly why us vets ask owners of dogs with heart conditions to track it at home. You can do this without touching your dog. All you need is a sleeping dog and a timer. Watch the video for how to check it, and where the normal range sits. Day 2 of my Home Vet Check Series. Save this to try tonight when your dog's asleep. #vetadvice #dogheartdisease #resprate #dogheartcheck #homevetcheckseries

There are apps which can track this as well, you hit the screen every time your dog completes a breath, then it calculates it for you

There is an app called "Pet Breath Counter" that will automatically do it for you and track the results over time.
Just press start and tap the button everytime they take a full breath ideally when they are asleep like he said.
I used this for my pup that died of heart failure and I have already been using it with my new puppy to get a baseline for what is his normal

My vet did not tell me this until my dog was in heart failure, despite me taking him for regular check ups specifically regarding his heart murmur.

My dog was diagnosed last July with congestive heart failure, he’s on medication. I was told I only had a year with him. I don’t know how that can tell me how long I have left with him while he’s on medication.

thank you for posting this 💙 we just put our Teddy down March 13 from CHF, just shy of his 14th birthday. we only learned about and started tracking RHR the last 3 months of his life. I really wish we would have had this info before 2023 when he was diagnosed with a murmur. 😣 my heart is absolutely shattered, I miss him with every fibre of my being, and I still don't know how I'm supposed to go on without him. 💔 please hug your pups and give them a good scritch and kiss from me. cherish every moment you have with them. they're gone too soon.

I have an old boy, he is very active, runs with no issue. He was a rescue but his only health issue is he has horrible gum disease (it was like this when we found him). He has recently lost a little bit of weight and I have swapped him to soft food. His resting rate now as I type is 24. However every now and again he has some episodes where he pants very fast. He isnt hot or post exercise, maybe last 20 to 30 minutes then he settles. He does not appear to be in any pain and is a happy dog. What might that be? Thanks.

Moana and Belle :
Moana was diagnosed with heart failure on 12/06/2026. She was prescribed heart medication and a cough suppressant, and for months she did so well.
On July 4, she started getting sick. Her medications were changed on July 6. She got worse, and she was given antibiotics and two more medications. By July 16, she was struggling so much.
On 07/17/2026 at 6:58 AM, my beautiful girl took her last breath.
I will always carry the guilt of wondering if I should have taken her to the vet sooner. I trusted the advice that as long as she was eating and drinking, she was okay. Sadly, that wasn’t what happened.
I share our story not to blame anyone, but because I love her so deeply and I miss her every second. Moana, I am so sorry. I hope you know how loved you were and always will be. Until we meet again, my sweet girl. 🕊️🐾💔

our poodle senior was diagnosed with mitral valve disease last year when my mom noticed she was panting when she hadn’t been active… turned out she also had wet lungs and if we hadn’t gone to the vet as early as we did she may have suffered cardiogenic shock and passed :,( so scary esp when she was very healthy before this!

This is both great info and terrifying because I already worry when my dog seems to be panting/breathing harder for no reason. 😅 Will be doing this!

Can you do a video on palpating lymph nodes? I read that lymphoma accounts for 18-20% of cancers in dogs and swollen lymph nodes are the first sign but the lymph nodes in the neck are so close to the salivary glands that it's difficult to tell.

My dog was diagnosed with AV block 2, it’s been a year and a half since diagnosis, they did a Holter monitor and said her episodes were only about 10% so no need for a pacemaker. But they didn’t tell
