Allowance needs to be physical cash at that age that they can see get smaller and smaller. Not invisible money on a magical card.

I kind of do think you’re the a hole. I’m all for giving them an ambiguity with their money, but you didn’t have to accept his offer to pay for a meal.

YTA as a mom of a 4 year old she wouldn't get it, she just knows she's happy she could pay for everyone and it makes her happy. you could have easily "let him pay" to feel good about himself but you actually pay for the damn food, regardless of if you plan on going back to buy the toy

here's my question. Who were these "other people". If they are adults they shouldn't be allowing a 4year old pay for their meals. if they are other children the parents shouldn't be allowing a 4 year old to pay for them

YTA. he's 4. your teaching him responsibility with me but where was the teaching. a permissive "your money will run out" and you let him do it????? that's not parenting. and since OP didn't agree with husband giving it to son, I feel she let this happen to prove a point

I have to say yes he’s four years old. He doesn’t know better. You’re the parent that’s when you’re supposed to take control. If the child wanted to jump in an alligator pit because he thought it was OK, you’d let him. No , at four years old children do not know better that’s why you’re the parent.

IF SHE was planning to get the toy .... she wouldn't need to go back to get it , she would have gotten it already....she is only pretending she would get the toy cause husband found out. cause there is NO WAY she is spending day to go back to Disney world for a toy ONLY

I know this is about a 4-year old, but this lesson applies to older children, teens and adults. Instead of giving a debit card with money, give cash. People have a more emotional attachment when they can physically see and feel cash vs. a credit or debit card. By handing over cash to purchase something, you can see the funds going away and what you're left with. This was how I taught my teen stepdaughter financial skills. When she went shopping, I made her ask herself "Is this a need or a want?" Needs come first, then you determine how badly you want something.
