Egypt has begun phasing out horse and camel rides around the Pyramids of Giza as part of a major overhaul aimed at improving animal welfare and modernising one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions. The move follows years of criticism from animal welfare organisations, which documented cases of horses and camels being overworked, malnourished and mistreated while carrying tourists in extreme heat.
