@adivunsolicited: Replying to @sigmareadings Race isn't real. It was invented deliberately, by Europe to justify colonization and slavery. That's history, not anything open to an opinion. Yet every time a Black person names racism plainly, the reflex isn't reflection, it's denial. This World Cup was a case study. Argentine fans got caught on camera with racist chants and still denied having a problem. French commentators called their own star players "not French" the second France lost. UK commentators questioned whether Jude Bellingham is "really English" because his mother is Jamaican the moment England was out. Different countries, same reflex: love us when we win, question our belonging when we lose. People treat racism as an American export, something that happens "over there." But every Black American, Jamaican, Trinidadian, or Bajan carrying an English or Scottish last name is proof otherwise proof of empire, proof of ownership. That's not "American-style" racism. That's the raw material Europe built the whole system out of. Feel however you want about what this says about your country. You just don't get to pretend it isn't true and deny that racism is happening and it needs to be addressed #worldcup #british #judebellingham #argentina #france

Calling you a monkey while denying the existence of racism is the height of hypocrisy.

The most dangerous kind of racism is the invisible kind. The one you don’t even notice because it’s the normal. I don’t say that I’m “not racist” because I know that I might’ve been taught something without even realizing what it was. All I can do is try to be aware of myself and listen if I’m ever called out for it.

I discussed it with a colleague who “knows a lot of nice people in Argentina” and he told me that my racism definition is european and there is no racism in Argentina, they just discriminate based on education, social status and heritage. So, racism? It is frustrating

racism maybe presented differently in the UK but it's definitely a huge issue. at the moment it's focused on Muslims and immigration but it would easily shift on to any other poc. I'm white and it's an uncomfortable topic but I know I have ingrained learned racism to unpack.

can you speak about how the Spanish people deny the black genocide and native genocide in America by the Spanish Empire. They teach in schools that the Spanish Empire had no slavery because it was forbidden so they deny black and natives were no slaves in the global south.

There are way too many people that like to believe that we live in some sort of racial utopia in the UK, which weird given that we currently have two political far right parties that have grown in size over the last few years and have policies centered in remigration, even towards those born and raised here, whose parents/grandparents may have migrated here (like 98% of the current English football team) 🙄🤷🏾♀️

I think some folks from other countries view racism as strictly American because it’s more blatantly in your face. And because America has one of the biggest stages in the world, so our “dirty laundry” is louder than the counties that enable the same beliefs. The World Cup has truly provided a world view. While America is the one of the youngest and more visible, we are not the first or the only who carries the horror of slavery, oppression, genicide, and racism. The difference in America is that we loudly have the conversation, been calling it out while others sit in denial, close their eyes and say they don’t see it. Those who are on the receiving end , fall silent because they know it won’t be acknowledged. It’s like the family member who protects the inappropriate touching uncle because he’s family and their image of unity, while denying protection of his victims within the family. You just don’t talk about it but the trauma is very present. And just because you don’t want to name it doesn’t mean everyone else has to stay silent. Racism is present, and it’s not just America’s sin to carry.
