Love at first sight is a real thing. It's an observable neurological phenomenon. But according to the philosopher and cognitive scientist Berit Brogaard, it might not be as romantic as Hollywood portrays it. Brogaard spent years studying the brain during romantic attraction, and she found that that electric pull you get when you find somebody attractive is actually pattern recognition. Your brain will notice a face and hear their voice, or see how they hold themselves and compare it against a template. This template was built from every person who ever mattered to you: your parents, your first love, your closest friends, the teacher who believed in you, and the person who broke your heart. All of these people left traces, and your brain assembles these traces into an unconscious composite about what love should look like. And so when you experience love at first sight, you are not falling in love with a person, but a pattern. But, of course, this stranger, this human being, is also a person with their own history and their own pattern. And according to Brogaard, this is why first love is often so intense and so fragile. Because you are not falling in love with an other. You are falling in love with your own history. And so early love turns into real love when the pattern fades and the actual person starts to show through. It's when they stop being familiar and stop being strange, because that is when you can actually choose to love them. Choosing to love a person as they actually are is the only love that is real.
