making your kid pay for anything before they're fully financially self sufficient is absolutely ridiculous

You can contribute to the house without paying rent under 25. I think they forget that sometimes

I disagree. We all payed rent. Not a lot, but enough to realize that rent is a thing that is a part of adulthood. It’s not a “you have to or you can’t live here” but it is a “you’re an adult now, so we’re easing you into adulthood by making you cover your food expenses by calling it ‘rent’”. I’m gonna do it to my kids too. I think it’s all in presentation and logic as you do it. None of my siblings resent our parents

I earned £4 an hour and worked maybe twice or three times a week and my parents asked me for 20%. I assumed they were putting it away but it was just money for cigarettes and booze.

I’m not a parent yet but one day I wish to be and what I’m going to do if my kids for whatever reason isn’t going to uni and can’t move out is simply support them the best I can during that first year and then the second yeah ask them to show me there finances to see how much they can offer me and the take what ever number we agree upon and after a year however much they’ve gave me I’d give them I back (I don’t think I need to explain thr reasoning behind my idea but for anyone confused I’ll explain)

It’s fucked cus it just shows that their parents don’t like their company at home. Parents that love their kids would as much as they could to keep them home

In our culture it’s never that the parents ask for rent, it’s more the kids wanna stay and help out at home financially when they can. Thats the right way
