@darwinningfacts: Meet South Africa’s national mammal—the Springbok. While they look like standard, elegant plains antelopes, they possess an evolutionary superpower called pronking. If you've ever seen a Springbok explode into the air, leaping up to 2 meters (over 6 feet) straight up with a rigid back and bowed legs, you’ve witnessed pronking. But why do they do it? The Science: Evolutionarily, pronking is a high-stakes communication tool known as an honest signal. When a predator like a cheetah approaches, a springbok doesn't just run; it leaps into the air. This sends a direct, un-fakeable message to the predator: "Look how much explosive power and energy I have. I am far too fit to waste your time chasing." Biologists have found they are uniquely built for these bursts. A study on their muscle physiology revealed that Springboks have an incredibly high concentration (58%) of glycolytic fast-twitch muscle fibers in their hind legs. This gives them an anaerobic capacity four times higher than a human athlete, allowing them to shift from a standstill to over 88 km/h (55 mph) almost instantly. #wildlife #naturalhistory #springbok #darwinning #evolution @SANParks @ewt_santos @SouthAfrica @Springboks.rugby
